The Best American Nonrequired Reading Series

The Best American Nonrequired Reading series is published each year so the official name of these books go something like this: The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2011 or The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2003. You get the idea.

These compilations bring together fiction from periodicals and magazines that are often overlooked in our "read it now online" world.

These stories are geared toward a younger crowd (15 to 25 year olds), but I'm old and I love them. That may have to do with Dave Eggers, who is the editor of this series. He's a pretty funny writer who knows funny when it jumps off the page at him.

At Home Spa -- Natural Beauty Tips

This bath soak is soothing and all natural and so easy to make.

You'll need:

1 cup ground oats (use the blender to grind them super fine)
1 cup salt (epsom salt, kosher salt, sea salt all work)
1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil (optional, use it if you have it; I buy small bottles at the dollar store)
1 teaspoon essential oil (peppermint or whatever scent you like)

Mix all the ingredients of the oatmeal salt bath soak thoroughly in a bowl. Store in a glass jar. Add a few tablespoons to a hot bath for a relaxing soak.

Cheap Gift Alert!

This makes a great gift too. Save small glass jars, remove the labels, and clean them. Store them with the lids off till you want to use them so any odors can dissipate. Pour the bath soak in a jar and tie a ribbon around the top. Add a decorative spoon or an old silver spoon too, if you want, to scoop out just the right amount.

A Week of Meals

When you use a 7 days meal plan, you feel in control of your week. You can adjust your cooking to fit your day if you choose easy recipes that can either be prepared ahead or quickly the same day. When you go out to eat, look at the menu and think about what choices you could make at home.

Begin your meal planning with a list of food staples you normally cook with and have on hand. Add items like eggs, specific fruits and vegetables, cheeses, breads, tortillas, pastas, canned goods like beans, tomatoes, soups, and so on to your shopping list.

Next, jot down all of your family's favorite dishes. Include the simplest things like ham and cheese sandwiches, scrambled eggs, grilled cheese, vegetable beef soup, chicken dishes, hamburgers, tacos--whatever your family's favorite meals are.

Some tips for cooking once, eating twice: cook enough meat (chicken, ground beef, whatever) so you can use if for two meals; bake a dessert in two small pans instead of a large one and freeze one dessert for another day; buy food on sale and freeze it to stretch your grocery budget.
