James M. Cain first wrote the novel Mildred Pierce in 1941. Then in 1945, Mildred Pierce was made into a Hollywood movie starring Joan Crawford. The latest version is the 2011 HBO miniseries starring Kate Winslet, Guy Pearce, and Evan Rachel Wood.
Mildred Pierce is a divorced single mom during the Depression and to earn money, she bakes pies and cakes, then waits tables to support her two young daughters. The movie takes her through her growth in business and deals with troubles with her daughters, especially her older daughter Veda who is spoiled and insolent.
